Upon waking up for the second time, Jill found herself on the ground, but with her head resting in Fairy Godmotherâs lap.
âFeeling better now?â she asked Jill.
âI guess so,â replied Jill, sitting up slowly. âMy throat is a bit dry.â
âNo doubt from all that yelling you did. I donât have a lot of magic these days, but I think I can whip something up for you.â And with that, Fairy Godmother made a tall glass of lemonade appear out of thin air. Or, to be honest, she conjured up a glass with several unpeeled lemons squished into it.
âThatâs not what I wanted to do. Hold on,â said Fairy Godmother. With a nod, she made the glass of lemons disappear and instead turned Jill into a lemon tree.
âNo, no, no,â she sighed. But rather than turning Jill back into herself, she turned her into a big lemon with arms and legs sticking out.
âI can fix that,â said Fairy Godmother, looking slightly embarrassed. She finally changed Jill back to normal. âSorry. Something is interfering with my magic. Shall I try again?â
âNo, no, thatâs okay,â insisted Jill, who was afraid she might end up as a lemon meringue pie. âBut thank you, anyway.â
âThank you for coming to rescue us, Jill,â said Fairy Godmother. âI believe I chose wisely in asking for your help. But you have had a rough couple of days.â
âI donât want to be disrespectful, but this place is horrible. There is so much mean stuff going on all the time.â
Fairy Godmother smiled warmly at Jill. âI see. Grimm doesnât make a lot of sense to you, does it? But someone coming into your motherâs kingdom might find all of you different too. Is that Pumpkin Eater fellow still treating his wife poorly?â
âOh, no. He and his wife worked it out. Heâs Peter Salad Eater now,â replied Jill.
âAnd Georgie-Porgie? Is he still kissing any girl he chooses?â
âOh, Iâm pretty sure I took care of that nasty habit.â
âPerhaps, Jill, with a little time and support, Grimm can work out its problems too.â
Fairy Godmother stood up, and for the first time Jill had a chance to really look at her. Fairy Godmother was tall. Her dress was sizable but looked as light as air, and it was as sparkly as Red had described it. There was a glow about Fairy Godmother that brightened everything around her.
âJill, I would like you to meet someone who might offer you a little hope in the land of Grimm. Then you can decide whether you still wish to help us or not.â Then she turned around and tiptoed through the forest. From behind, Jill could see the small delicate wings on Fairy Godmotherâs back.
While they walked, Jill told Fairy Godmother everything she had learned so far. She told her all about the spells with the image of the castle adorned with lights.
She told her how all the women she met kept trying to make themselves look beautiful but never seemed to be satisfied. And she told her about the shopkeepers and the elves.
